Creating a Personal Website Attracts Hiring Managers
If you haven’t been looking for a job in a while, you might not know the value of having your own personal website for a job search, but it might just be the difference between you getting that great job you want or not getting it.
With the improvements in technology, personal branding has become a concept in job hunting to present your resume, showcase your skills, and publish articles you have written or are related to the industry you want to work in.
“This sounds like it would be labor extensive when you need to spend the time on your resume and doing cover letters,” said Alan Hubbard, LandAjob’s Chief Operating Officer. “With all the different platforms that are easy to use, developing your own website has become a very easy process. It is always a very effective way to get noticed by job hunters and recruiters. You might have the skill they are really looking for and they will find you.”
LandAjob, a nonprofit organization, helps Americans with disabilities find employment in the United States with a job database of more than 600,000 jobs and they also help find out how they can receive up to $13,000 in job reimbursements and expenses. Register for free at www.landajob.org.
The first step is to research the available websites that specialize in building pages and see which ones meet what you want to accomplish with your site. This can be just a matter of presenting your resume or it could be showcasing your past work and accomplishments by including your portfolio and a testimonial page.
You want to include a professional photo and a bio that tells a little bit about you. The domain name for your pages should also be easy to find, and you want to try using your own name.
“Remember you are presenting yourself to a person who might want to hire you, so you want to make sure it is a positive reflection of yourself,” said Hubbard. “How your message appears will be how the recruiter or hiring manager sees you for the first time. You also want to make sure they can find your page easily, so some version of your name is always a good option.”
When you are looking at the different formats to use, make sure you are making it available to be looked at easily by Google. With that in mind, though, you also want to make sure your privacy is protected.
“The possibilities are almost endless here with everything there is out there,” said Hubbard. “If you have the skills to build a website, this will be another avenue to showcase what you know to a job recruiter.”
