What You Need to Do to Change Careers
If you are an American with disabilities, you might not be able to go back to your old job or you might just want to explore a different career opportunity. On average, Americans change jobs three times, so you aren’t alone in switching careers, so don’t worry if you are thinking about applying for an at home job working in call center jobs and wondering if you are going the necessary skills.
“We see this a lot,” said Alan Hubbard, LandAjob’s Chief Operating Officer. “People are either forced or want to make a change. You shouldn’t get discouraged by not working in a call center job before. There are a lot of skills, you have and might not be thinking about. We, and other companies, work to help you identify your skills.”
At LandAjob people have gone from working as physical trainers, computer technicians, and in the trades to working in a call center.
“You should put down your skills and see how they match up with the jobs you are looking for,” said Hubbard. “This will help you analyze what you need. One job tip is to look back at old jobs and see what skills you were required to do there. There might have been a computer project you worked on and that gave you the skills the hiring manager is looking for.”
There are 10 qualities and skills employers identify as transferable skills, according to the 2014 National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). They are the ability to work as a team; ability to make decisions and solve problems; ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work; ability to verbally communicate with persons inside and outside organizations; ability to obtain and process information; ability to analyze quantitative data; the job’s technical knowledge; proficiency with computer software programs; about to edit; create written reports and ability to see or influence others.
“According to hiring managers, being able to work as part of team is a very important trait, even if you are working remotely,” said Hubbard. “You want to make sure you stress your ability to be a good teammate in the cover letter and highlight it on your resume. That could be the thing that separates you for getting or not getting the job.”
